If you are reinstalling a driver, it is typically best to go with the newest version of that driver. The best way to get the newest drivers is directly from Dell.
If your desktop does not have internet without this driver, download the file (as follows) on another computer and move it to your dimension and install (as follows).
Browse to Dell's driver download page:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
There will be a service tag somewhere on the tower of your Dell 3100 desktop, type in this service tag on the product identification page. Note: the drivers here may not be applicable if you have upgraded your computer's hardware since purchasing it.
Be sure to choose the correct operating system you plan on running on this machine. Under category you can select 'Network'. This will bring up all of the network adapter drivers. Select the first driver labeled 'Dell Utility' which applies to the wireless USB adapter.
Choose the 'Download' button and save the driver to your computer. Double click this file and follow the onscreen instructions to install the software.
Your wireless internet device should now work!
